With a variety of options to choose from, our solid hardwood linear chandeliers truly provide a unique way to design, style and light your interior space. The following guide provides a detailed breakdown of all of the important aspects to consider when placing an order for your bespoke chandelier.
Hardwood Type and Finish
The solid hardwoods we use to craft our lighting are available in a variety of species and finishes. As a standard, we offer the following five types of timber:
-
Walnut
-
White Oak
-
Ash
-
Cherry
-
Hard Maple
Additionally, through our network of sustainable wood suppliers, we can source other species such as Rosewood, Teak, Mahogany, Hickory, Alder, Buttermilk and others for tailored requests. Read more about our standard timber species here.
All standard hardwoods are finished with our Trä Beeswax Blend, a proprietary finish that enhances the natural beauty of the wood while leaving a protective barrier to the grain. While beeswax is our go-to finish, we also offer:
-
Stain: Paired with a grain-raising process, leaving desired coloration while retaining the grain pattern.
-
Bleaching: Creates a muted wood tone accompanied by prominent grain patterns.
-
Flame-Blackened: Using the Japanese Shou Sugi Ban process, this finish results in a blackened appearance sealed with wax.
Our team is happy to discuss options for custom finishes and timbers tailored to your project’s unique requirements.
Length
Can you adjust the length of a linear chandelier?
Nörska’s solid hardwood linear chandeliers are available in set lengths ranging from 800mm (31.5”) to 2400mm (94.5”). For unique dimensions, we can craft custom lengths in increments of 50mm (2”). If you’re unsure about the ideal chandelier length for your project, share your measurements, an image, or a rendering of your space, and our team will be happy to advise on the best option for you.
How long should a linear chandelier be?
For kitchen islands or dining tables, we recommend leaving an inset of approximately 250mm (10”) to 610mm (24”) on each side. For example, if your kitchen island is 3000mm (118”), a chandelier length between 2100mm (82.5”) and 2500mm (98.5”) will provide balanced light coverage and an aesthetically pleasing proportion. These guidelines help ensure your chandelier enhances the functionality and style of your space.
Hardware Finish
Available in a handful of select options, our hardware fittings and down rods are fully customizable in appearance. As standard offerings we provide the following metal finishes:
- Black Anodized Aluminum
- Polished Natural Brass
- Brushed Stainless Steel
- Powder Coat White
Custom finishes are also available upon request to match the accents in your space. For a cohesive design, we recommend ensuring all metal finishes in the room complement each other.
Mounting Style
Depending on your installation location and aesthetic preferences, we offer three mounting options:
-
Canopy: Milled from matched hardwood to complement the chandelier, this canopy is ideal for centered junction boxes and offers flexible electrical routing.
-
Cup Mounting: A thin, clean disk mounting plate covering standard junction boxes. Power runs through one suspension cable, while the other mounts directly to the ceiling.
-
Remote Driver: Required for certain chandeliers where canopy mounting isn’t feasible. A qualified electrician should handle remote driver installations to ensure proper electrical routing.
For questions about mounting, our team is available to assist in determining the best solution for your space
Color Temperature
Color temperatures are measured in Kelvin (K), influencing the ambiance of your space:
-
2700K (Warm): Soft, inviting light for dining areas, living rooms, and lounges.
-
3000K (Neutral): Balanced, versatile light suitable for kitchens, offices, and dining spaces.
-
4200K (Cool): Crisp, energizing light for workspaces, bathrooms, and commercial settings.
For unique projects, we also offer custom color temperatures on request. To maintain a cohesive mood, ensure all light fixtures in the space operate at the same color temperature. For more insights and tips, visit our detailed blog post on selecting the perfect color temperature here.
Hanging Height
Hanging height plays a pivotal role in the functionality and aesthetics of your chandelier. For optimal placement:
-
Recommended Height for Kitchen Islands and Dining Tables: Position the chandelier base between 700mm (27.5”) and 1000mm (39.25”) from the surface below.
-
Lower placements create a warm, intimate atmosphere that draws people to the space.
-
Higher settings allow for broader light distribution and a more functional feel.
-
-
For Other Spaces: Use a similar approach:
-
Lower heights enhance ambiance and make the fixture a focal point.
-
Higher placements integrate the chandelier more seamlessly into the room.
-
-
Consider Key Factors:
-
Field of View: Avoid placing the fixture in the direct horizontal line of sight.
-
Attention Draw: Lower heights make the chandelier a centerpiece, while higher placements suit minimalist styles.
-
Light Cast: Our chandeliers have a 45-degree beam angle, meaning the horizontal light coverage is twice the vertical hanging height (e.g., 1000mm vertical placement = 2000mm horizontal light cast).
-
-
Suspension Flexibility: All Nörska chandeliers use flexible, cotton-woven cords for easy adjustment. We recommend selecting an additional 2 feet of cord length to allow for adjustments during installation and to accommodate diverse ceiling heights.
When ordering, provide your desired drop length (ceiling to chandelier base), and we’ll craft your fixture to your exact specifications. Need guidance? Contact the Nörska team for personalized recommendations tailored to your space.
