Nörska grew its roots in 2020 as a garage woodworking studio tucked away on the north end of Colorado Springs, CO. With an innate passion for woodworking and lighting design, principals Dennis and Ryan Johnson (Father and Son) paired their unique talents to begin crafting sophisticated yet simple lighting design solutions. Drawing upon their roots and a love for Scandinavian design, minimalist styling with an emphasis on natural beauty became the stylistic mark of a Nörska product. With Nörska’s continued growth, new Artisans have since joined its team, all of whom are motivated to create truly unique lighting solutions.

The Swedish expression Lagom is synonymous with the concept of balance, i.e., not too much or not too little. As part of Scandinavian culture, achieving a balance is paramount, whether it pertains to work and play, to quality of time spent together or alone, or to the quantity of material goods that we possess. Moderation and balance in every aspect of life are at the core of Scandinavian culture and are exemplified in Scandinavian interior design. Nörska embraces Lagom as our core design concept. It is a design principle blending color, texture, and natural elements to create simple yet sophisticated aesthetics.
Creating a piece of art begins with quality materials. Nörska has partnered with specific sawmills across the United States who are committed to lasting sustainable quality timber harvest. By selective harvesting our partners mimic the natural ecosystem’s process of when a tree dies naturally, in effect reducing the environmental impact and ensuring timber resources for the future. An additional benefit to this technique is the ability to hand select specific trees for optimal character , ensuring ideal aesthetic potential.
Once the timber arrives in the studio, the craftsmanship begins. With the unique nature of natural wood consisting of knots, unrepeatable grain patterns, wood sap, distinctive color variations and more, every Nörska wood artwork is guaranteed to be one of a kind. By hand selecting unique pieces of timber for each product, our artisans ensure perfect chemistry between the pieces’ contemporary lines, and the timber’s natural grain. Our artisans believe each uniquely charactered piece of timber has an ideal product. It is this attention to detail that begins our process of high-quality, made-to-order Nörska wood artistry.
With the correct timber paired to the project, the milling process begins. Through a synchronized effort of multiple machines, the rough sawn timber from the sawmill is slowly sized to the basic components of your future Nörska wood artwork. Extra attention is required to read the natural forces at play in the grain. Timber naturally has internal force between grain layers, causing twists, cupping and warping. The artisan reads the wood for these potential forces at play and alleviates them through time-honored milling techniques. The outcome, straight and true milled pieces, ready for the next phase.
At this stage the wood has been generally sized. Using an assortment of hand tools the intricacies begin to take shape, creating the general aesthetic of the piece. During this phase the artisan pays close attention to tolerances, striving and attaining +/-0.1mm of error. We believe in the mantra “aim small miss small”, with an outcome of perfection.
Due to the nature of wood growth, knots, checks, burls, and other natural defects, resin is needed to stabilize and fill potential weak points in the grain. Using vacuumed slow curing resin the voids in the wood are hand-filled. This allows the grain to stabilize for maximum strength prior to hand sanding to create a smooth finish. The slow curing process of the resin ensures long term stability in the wood and reinforced rigidity. Our artisans use an assortment of tried and true techniques to create appealing resin blends. By mixing additive material, the epoxy blends to the grain tones, preserving the natural appeal. In some situations your artisan may select an epoxy blend to highlight the uniqueness of your Nörska wood artwork.
Nörska’s signature preferred finish is an organic liquid beeswax blend that not only protects, but enhances the natural wood tones. The finish penetrates the wood leaving a thin film of beeswax to protect the surface while producing a warm wood glow with a slight sheen. One of the most desirable benefits to this finish is how easy it is to maintain the original look of your art piece. Any needed touch up can be accomplished with a wipe of an infused beeswax cloth. Simply reapplying and gently rubbing in a new coat will freshen up and fix any imperfections. If an alternative finish such as bleaching, blackening or oxidizing is desired it will be worked and applied at this point.
The piece is ready to receive our signature brand after the finish is applied. The artisan will heat an iron to 700°F and manually apply the iron slowly to the wood surface. What is left is the unique mark of a truly artisan-crafted piece of art.
Upon receiving the Nörska brand of quality and artisan approval, the final assembly begins. With meticulous attention to tolerances during the previous stages, the components need little alterations in their assembly. Should small adjustments be required, the artisan will use hand tooling to remove small amounts of material until perfect fit and finish are attained. On our lighting fixtures this stage is where the wiring and electrical is assembled, completing the final product.
All our pieces go through a quality check upon completion of final assembly. We test the electrical components, confirm custom specification requests, and the general fit and finish of the product. This is the point where we assure those who order with Nörska nothing but our best is being delivered.
To ensure safe delivery of your new piece, we put the same pride and love into the packaging as we do the product. With extra care we do our utmost to ensure the piece arrives safe and ready to be admired in its new home.
The light was the finishing touch to our kitchen remodel. It gives off beautiful light. Nörska was very helpful in customizing my order to have a black stain to coordinate with my drawer pulls. I chose 200 cm with the upgraded high output and dimmable features for our 10 foot island.
This chandelier is perfect for what we needed. Just unique enough to be special but less expensive than a fully custom-built piece. Ryan and his team were very accommodating, responsive and patient with my questions and special requests. The vendor interactions we had while doing our kitchen reno were all very disappointing, but this exchange was a rare bright spot. I would highly recommend Ryan’s products both for their quality and the customer service provided.
